THE ISSUES HEALTHCARE
The Affordable Care Act, also known as the ACA or Obamacare, provided my first reliable access to health insurance in 20 years. I am deeply grateful to every elected official who fought and continues to fight for quality and affordable health insurance. For a self-employed teacher like myself, the private insurance market was completely out of reach.
The Affordable Care Act has prevented insurance companies from denying healthcare to people with pre-existing conditions. Before the ACA protections, people were forced into high-risk pools with out-of-pocket costs that pushed families into bankruptcy and resulted in untreated illnesses and unnecessary deaths. The ACA provides pricing coverage for women at the same rate as men, as well as allowing young people to remain on their parent’s policy until age 26.
Despite the ACA, Texas has the highest rate of uninsured citizens, roughly 4.5 million individuals. I will fight to increase access to affordable, quality healthcare and support the Medicaid expansion in Texas.
